DEFUND THE POLICE
REFUND THE COMMUNITY
Across the country, calls to Defund the Police have garnered attention. We firmly believe that, in most cases, policing brings violence into the community, especially Black, brown and Indigenous communities. Through restorative justice efforts, we can build new communities that begin to rely less and less on police as an institution. We firmly believe that funding in other areas, that benefit communities, will make us safer than any police department would. Click the link below if you live in the City of Tampa to take the survey.
Imagine if we had less officers patrolling and looking for trouble, especially in poor Black neighborhoods. We could cut the amount of personnel down drastically and divert funds from whatever "Other" is, directly into community services. Contact City Council via phone and/or email and ask others to do so as well. In your own words say: "My name is (name) and I am calling on you to defund the police and refund the community. I want to see more money go into Black businesses, anti-gentrification measures, housing, public child care and health care, community gardens and other areas that will be more effective for developing community growth instead of policing. I am also calling on an end to broken windows policing and demanding our police departments prioritize community growth, not punishing the poor."
